Portfolio programmes

AI Programmes for Venture and Private Equity Portfolios

AI programmes for venture funds, private-equity owners, and accelerators: triage each company into education, validation, implementation, or no intervention.

Direct answer

Direct answer: Portfolio programmes

When portfolio companies keep asking for AI help, the sponsor needs a way to tell which companies need education, which need a claim tested, which need engineering, and which should wait. I run clinics and cohort programmes that make that triage explicit for each company and give the sponsor an anonymised view across the portfolio. No company is steered into an implementation engagement it does not need.

The question

“Our portfolio companies keep asking for AI help. Can a programme triage who needs education, validation, engineering, or no intervention?”

Who it is for

Platform and portfolio-support teams at venture funds, operating partners at private-equity owners, and accelerator programme directors.

Portfolio triage: each company gets the right next step

Portfolio triage: each company gets the right next step Seed company: Founder-led, early data; Series A company: First AI features; Growth company: Several AI initiatives; Owned business: Operations and margins; Confidential triage: Intake, clinic, evidence; Education: Shared understanding first; Validation: Test the key claim; Implementation: Build with an owner; No intervention yet: Revisit with better data Seed company Founder-led, early data Series A company First AI features Growth company Several AI initiatives Owned business Operations and margins Confidential triage Intake, clinic, evidence Education Shared understanding first Validation Test the key claim Implementation Build with an owner No intervention yet Revisit with better data
No company is pushed towards implementation. "Not yet" is a valid outcome.

Choose the specific need

Where to start

What you leave with

A multi-company AI clinic or capability programme with a triage outcome for every participating company.

  • 01 A short intake for each company covering its product, data, team, and the AI question it is actually facing
  • 02 A triage outcome for each company: education, validation, implementation, or no intervention yet
  • 03 Company-specific next steps the founders or management team can act on without outside help
  • 04 An anonymised programme-level summary of patterns, gaps, and recurring requests for the sponsor

How it runs

Format, method, and preparation

Duration
From a single clinic day to a programme of sessions and office hours over several weeks
Delivery
Remote, or in person in the UK for cohort sessions
Participants
Founders, CEOs, or management teams of participating companies, with the sponsor’s programme owner
01

Agree the sponsor’s purpose

Decide what the programme is for: founder education, better capital allocation, operating improvement, or risk visibility, and how success will be judged.

02

Run company intake

Each company describes its product, data, people, current AI use, and the question it most needs answered.

03

Hold the clinics or sessions

Work through each company’s question in a confidential session or in differentiated cohort groups.

04

Record triage and report patterns

Give each company its own outcome and next steps, and give the sponsor an anonymised summary across the portfolio.

Useful to have ready

  • →A named programme owner at the fund, owner, or accelerator
  • →Agreement from participating companies to take part and complete a short intake
  • →Clarity on what the sponsor may and may not see from individual company sessions

Scope and limits

What this is not

  • —Programmes are technical and operating decision support. They are not investment advice, valuation, or a view on whether to fund a company.
  • —There is no mandatory implementation follow-on. “No intervention yet” is a legitimate and common triage outcome.
  • —Company-specific discussions stay confidential between the company and me unless the company agrees otherwise; the sponsor receives an anonymised programme summary.

If the need is different

Common questions

Answers before you commission

How is a portfolio AI programme different from sending every company on an AI course?+

It starts from each company’s actual question and ends with a different outcome per company. A course gives everyone the same content; a triage programme decides who needs learning, a test, engineering, or nothing yet.

What does the sponsor receive?+

An anonymised summary of patterns across the portfolio: common blockers, data and capability gaps, and the share of companies in each triage outcome. Company-specific detail is shared only with that company’s agreement.

Will companies be pushed into consulting work?+

No. The programme is designed to be useful on its own. If a company later wants implementation help, that is a separate decision it makes, scoped separately.

Can this work for both venture and private-equity portfolios?+

Yes, but the formats differ. Venture clinics work with founders at varied stages; private-equity work fits an owner’s early operating review; accelerator programmes run as structured cohorts.

Scope a portfolio programme

A short written brief is enough to establish fit. I reply personally, and say plainly when the work belongs elsewhere or is not worth commissioning.

Portfolio or cohort programme: what to include

  • →Sponsor organisation and programme owner
  • →Number, stage, and sector of participating companies
  • →What companies are asking for
  • →Desired outputs for the sponsor and for each company
  • →Format: clinics, cohort sessions, office hours, or review
  • →Timing and duration
  • →Budget range and who pays
  • →Confidentiality expectations between companies
